「魂」は人間だけのものじゃない

Early in the 21st Century, THE TYRELL
CORPORATION advanced Robot evolution
into the NEXUS phase -- a being virtually
identical to a human -- known as a Replicant.
The NEXUS 6 Replicants were superior
in strength and agility, and at least equal
in intelligence, to the genetic engineers
who created them.
Replicants were used Off-world as
slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and
colonization of other planets.
After a bloody mutiny by a NEXUS 6
combat team in an Off-world colony,
Replicants were declared illegal
on earth -- under penalty of death.
Special police squads -- BLADE RUNNER
UNITS -- had orders to shoot to kill, upon
detection, any trespassing Replicants.
This was not called execution.
It was called retirement.

初めて見たときの衝撃は忘れられない。見た目は人間そっくりだが、感情と寿命において劣るとされるレプリカント。しかし彼らの行動を見て、人間以下と侮れるだろうか。人間以外にも心は宿る。当時の私にとって、それは衝撃的な発想だった。

ロイの右手

ビデオに撮って、何度も見た。テープに録音したり、字幕を書き出した。あるとき私は気づく。ビルから落ちそうになったデッカードを、ロイは硬直しかけた右手で助けた。ロイにとってデッカードは、恋人や仲間を殺した敵である。寿命が尽きかけたとき、憎しみや殺意は消えたが、だからといって易々と助けるわけにはいかない。だから運を天にゆだねたのだ！
タイレルやセバスチャンを殺しておきながら、デッカードを許す。こんな理不尽な行動をするのは、人間以外の何者でもない。ロイには心が、そして魂がある！

記憶の移植

レイチェルは、タイレルの姪であったときの記憶を区別できていなかった。臓器や四肢なら移植された部分を区別できるが、記憶を移植されたら、どうやって自己を保てるだろう？　さらっと流されているけど、よくよく考えると怖いシーンだった。

いろいろ分析した私だが、小説を読むまで、もう1人のレプリカントの可能性に気づかなかった。それはのちに、ディレクターズカットで顕在化する。
とにもかくにも本作は、私の価値観を大きく変えた傑作である。
